Ambivalentine: ambiguous art, wordplay, and shop for ambivalent valentines, bi valentines, and anyone who appreciates that multiple true perspectives can coexist

Art with explanations! I may group like types together at some point as I add more content, though many categories overlap–interconnectedness being my whole thing. It’s so easy to find ways in which we’re different. To prey on fear. May be cheesy (or Ice Creamony), but I want to find ways we’re the same.

This is a simplified version of my favorite double face ambiguous figures1 of which I’ve created many variations over the years. It’s a face in profile from a 90 degree angle in either direction , features bi flag colors, and has the addition of a heart shape in the center. I would say it embodies the site, but can’t resist saying it puts a good face (or two) on it.

Additionally, Ambivalentine is a portmanteau2 of Ambivalent and Valentine. I’m definitely ambivalent about Valentine’s Day as a commercial holiday or any saintly expectations for it. But I like making fun or meaningful traditions with people I love. And I’m not ambivalent at all about people showing love for whomever they love regardless of things like gender, race, or orientation.
This is a version of the Ambivalentine Ambigram3 I created and am using as a Site Header. It reads the same right-side up as upside-down.
Mostly because it’s funny and I mentioned it in this Art Page’s explanatory paragraph, here are the “I Scream for Ice Creamon” Demon Horns I created. It’s a fun visual pun I made when I realized I cream could look like horns. I currently have the design on hats in my shop, but if I have the time and inclination may make a whole little cartoon demon or monster or somesuch to put on shirts and other things.
Mountain Faces: This ambiguous figure has two Mountain Faces. I enjoy having the visual/audio pun4 combination on this one.
  1. Ambiguous Figures: a figure (in this case art) that can be seen as portraying different things depending on one’s perspective or perception. This can be based on optical illusions, or point of view, or merely one’s own a priori assumptions like “The Dress” which can be seen as blue and black or white and gold. My designs primarily make use of viewing angle. ↩︎
  2. Portmanteau: A word comprised of two different words or word roots. Ambivalentine is a portmanteau of ambivalent and valentine. Quicksilverlining is a portmanteau of quicksilver and silver lining. It’s my favorite despite not having its own site yet. To me at least, it conveys the idea that the silver lining may be mercurial and ever-changing, but it’s there. ↩︎
  3. Ambigram: A word that can be read right-side up or upside down. Most of the ambigrams I’ve created to this point read the same either direction, but some can be read as a different word. ↩︎
  4. Pun: I assume most people know what a pun is, but I just want to point out that there can be multiple meaning via either sight or visuals. In the case of Mountain faces, you have both. These mountains have both traditional rock faces and human faces. Plus there are two human faces. Yay. ↩︎
